Introduction to CIMA

The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) was founded in 1919 and is the world’s leading and largest professional body of management accountants.

In 2012, in collaboration with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), CIMA established the designation – Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) to provide members with a new level of resources and recognition.

In 2017, members of CIMA and AICPA formed the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants to unite and strengthen the accounting profession globally. More than 650,000 members and students represent the CIMA network.

Eligibility Criteria

Your prior experience and qualification play a major role in determining at which level you can start the CIMA qualification.

Candidates with no prior experience or qualification are eligible to start at the CIMA Certificate level before moving onto the Professional Qualification.
A graduate or an AAT member can start directly at the Professional Qualification level.

A Masters’ in Accounting or MBA degree holder is eligible for the Master’s Gateway into the CIMA qualification – where the candidate can move onto the Strategic Level after clearing the Management Gateway Case Study exam.

Members of an IFAC body may be eligible for the Professional Gateway – where the candidate can start at the Strategic Level after clearing the Management Gateway Case Study exam.

CIMA Qualification

The CIMA Qualification comprises of:

  • The CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting
  • The CIMA Professional Qualification

Details of the CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting are:

  • It consists of 4 subjects which are examined as objective tests
  • These are computer based on-demand exams
  • It takes 12 – 18 months to complete
  • On successful completion, the candidate is awarded CIMA Cert BA

Details of the CIMA Professional Qualification are:

  • It is based on 3 pillars: Enterprise, Performance and Financial
  • It comprises of 3 levels: Operational, Management and Strategic
  • Each level consists of 3 subjects that each represents one of the 3 pillars mentioned above
  • The exams for the 3 subjects are computer based and can be attempted on demand
  • Each level also has a case study exam that can be attempted after clearing the 3 objective tests of that particular level
  • It takes 3 to 4 years to complete

Additional Points

  • Candidates have to complete a minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience and submit the Practical Experience Requirement (PER) application
  • On successful completion of the exams and the PER, a candidates is awarded the membership of the qualification and can use the designation of ACMA and CGMA

Exemptions

Fees payable to CIMA

There are 3 categories of fees payable to CIMA:

  1. Registration or Re-registration fees: Payable when you initially register with CIMA or if your registration lapsed and you wish to re-activate it. Your registration won’t lapse if you pay the Annual Subscription.
    The minimum amount is £77 but can go upto £425 for the Master’s and Professional Gateway registrations.
  2. Annual Subscription: An annual amount that becomes payable by 31st March each year. This amount maintains your registration with CIMA.
    The minimum amount payable by students is £120.
  3. Exam Fees: This amount is payable when you plan on sitting for an exam but the fee varies based on which country you are based in.

You can study for the CIMA exams on your own or with a tuition provider.
